About Susan Knight Studios

Susan is a Biologist, photographer, and naturalist guide. She was a working SCUBA diving Instructor (PADI Master SCUBA Diver Trainer) for 15 years and also trained hundreds of volunteer divers to identify and collect research data on local marine life species. For most of her life, she has been guiding, writing and teaching about the natural world and how important it is for our health and mental wellness. Much of her water work has been in the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. She has now transitioned mostly to freediving for under water photography projects.

As a tour guide, she has had the opportunity to take people scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, snowshoeing, pinzguaring, whale watching, taught boatloads of kids about the ocean and forest, and organized meditation/adventure retreats in several locations around the world. On any given day, an investigation of her backpack will likely reveal spare outdoor gear and snacks.

Concurrently, working as a model expanded into work in Canada's Hollywood North as a stand-in and then into set decoration. Here evolved an interest in what goes into producing a project. She loves planning and implementing epic creative photoshoots.

While living in Kona Hawaii, she fell in love with under water photography and launched Susan Knight Studios. She enjoys working with the outgoing as well as the camera shy, to capture underwater portraits that express unique personal essence and power. As an innovator of the Water Messages photoshoot, she assists people in exploring their connection with water and, therefore, themselves. Clients often describe their photo sessions with her as both fun and tranformative.

As an artist, she believes that focusing on beauty, and bringing awareness to self and environment engages creative outlets to explore and develop, for a more fulfilling life. She is fascinated with the human/nature connection and capturing it on film. Susan has worked extensively with professional Mermaids and loves that being a mermaid is a viable career choice. Some of the images she has accumulated appear in her Sea Yourself Designs adventure clothing & gear line.

Her photography has been featured in Sport Diver Magazine, Mermaids & Mythology Magazine, Freesurf Magazine, Big Island Weekly, West Hawaii Today72 & Rising Magazine, Organic Spa Magazine, Buzzfeed, Barnacle Babes Magazine (Cover, writer), Ocean Artist's Society Magazine (Cover, writer), Spirit & Destiny Magazine(UK), and the book Mermaids 101. Her work has been carried at The Watershed Arts Cafe, Raven Rock Gallery, and Holualoa Gallery.

Susan is a published co-author of marine life research training curriculae distributed by REEF and PADI.
